At the Bargo Sports Club. Due to the
extraordinary intellect & skills of the support
crew we won $30 for the Cancer Council in
the Bargo Trivia Night. A great way for Geoff
and Paul to prepare for the 40 kms on Friday.
3 Oct 08. Another surprise roadside
visit (the Hume Highway is the new
place to meet people). This time
Geoff's sister Kim joined us, along with
her swing-dancing buddies, on the way
to Sydney.
Yee-hah, Sydney! Paul, Geoff & Bob
celebrate reaching the urban fringe.
Everybody was absolutely buggered
by now but the achievement was
setting in.
4 Oct 08. We walked from
Campbelltown to Liverpool in the
morning, the in the afternoon had a
fundraising drive on the Liverpool
Plaza. In the photo are the the intrepid
staff from NAB Liverpool & Narellan,
who kindly gave up their saturday
afternoon to assist. It was all a bit
much for little James though.
The fundraising drive in action on the
Plaza, which raised about $400.
Luckily the rain held off.
Geoff & Paul with Paul's grandmother
Maria. She baked 100 "Walnut Kisses"
which sold out very quickly!
5 Oct 08. Destination GF
accomplished! The only thing missing
was the North Sydney Bears from the
Granf Final of the NSW Cup. Maybe
next year. Joining the boys for the last
part of the walk was Paul's
mother-in-law Jacqui (second from left).
Seahawk Down! Definitely the
highlight of the pre-match
entertainment, and just an awesome
sight. What was slightly disappointing
though was the NRL's missed
opportunity to celebrate the history of
the game in it's 100th season.
Which way do we go again? The main
game featured two of the most hated
teams in the comp, Manly &
Melbourne. The first half was
fantastic, a tight contest featuring
bruising defence. Manly led 8-0 at
half-time.
Manly's Michael Robertson (and
former junior team-mate of Geoff) goes
in for the first of his three tries
guaranteeing his future as a trivia
night question for decades to come.
40-0 and Manly win with the biggest
margin in a GF ever. Very galling to
see the Sea-Eagles get up for us as
Bears fans, but if ever a player
deserved to leave the NRL on this note
it is Steve Menzies. Hearing 80.000
people chanting "Beaver" is probably
not likely to be repeated ever again as
well.
And so we have reached the end of our Walk Against Cancer. To date $27,000 has been raised as well as plenty of community involvement, awareness and done in honour of those who have fought cancer and those fighting on. So if you have a dollar please donate it, and we encourage you to visit the Cancer Council website for more information on what they do and what you can do to help.
Our many thanks to the innumerable people, businesses, media, councils and departments that have made the Walk a reality; particularly our families, friends and colleagues. Geoff Davidson's crazy idea in the middle of a Canberra winter has grown to something that touched a lot of people. We will never forget the lady who pulled over on the Hume Highway outside of Goulburn and gave her last $11 as we were walking.
We hope you have enjoyed following our Walk and take care until the next time!
