25 Sep 08: The Launch Party at NAB
Canberra Business Centre with the BIG
cheque for the Cancer Council.
L to R, Dr Kevin White (Pres, Cancer Council
ACT), Andrew Barr MLA, Geoff Davidson
(Crazy Walker No. 1), John Hargreaves MLA
& Paul Batfay (Crazy Walker No. 2).
26 Sep 08. The Media Launch at Federal
Parliament (we'll do anything to get on TV).
L to R, Mr Barr, Mr White, Paul (with little
James), Geoff (with little Lyssie), Marc
Herbert (Raiders star halfback), Julian Salvi
(Brumbies star flanker), & Mr Hargreaves (a
good bloke despite following Collingwood).
THAT'S GOLD with all the assembled mob of
supporters. The fingers at the top of the NAB
banner are those of Geoff's brother Steve,
who was starting to whinge about his sore
arms.
Outside the NAB Canberra City Branch. The
branch was done up very nicely inside with
lots of balloons everywhere to celebrate the
Walk.
The gang at NAB Canberra Business Centre
came bolting out of the office on Northbourne
Avenue when they heard we were passing.
Smiles all round!
After the BBQ at NAB Dickson Branch. A big
thanks to Jenny, Inga and the crew for getting
into the spirit of the Walk. The sausage
sandwiches were snapped up and we raised
lots of money for the Caner Council.
27 Sep 08. Geoff is already finding the going
tough, and the sookie la-la is calling home to
complain about the blisters (Geoff's version
is that he was being a media superstar,
talking to ABC Radio Grandstand).
Geoff and Paul at the lookout with the first
sighting of Lake George. It was getting pretty
hot, and Collector seemed a long way away.
Each rest area along the way is named after
a recipient of a Victoria Cross. This helped
keep sore feet in perspective.
Everyone having a picnic at Lake George for
lunch. With us were Geoff's in-laws Rod &
Shannon, Geoff's parents Bob & Louise,
Geoff's wife Tash and their kids Lyssie and
James. Louise was doing the support
driving by now, giving her a chance to listen
to favourite 80's classics like Flashdance &
Eye of the Tiger. No wonder the NAB RAV4
only did 5 kph!
Geoff and Paul finally get to Collector after 37
tortuous kms! The Bushranger Hotel in the
background was built in 1860 and is where
the bushranger Ben Hall shot Constable
Samuel Nelson. We also stayed at the pub
and the couches in front of the log fire were
the only place we wanted to be.
28 Sep 08. Another 35-odd kms from
Collector to Goulburn. As a surprise, we
were joined in the afternoon by Geoff and
Paul's uncle Mick (pictured left) and auntie
Veona and their dog Byron (who refused to
wear a vest!). Pictured right is Tash's uncle
Chris, who kept walking with us right into
Goulburn city.
29 Sep 08. One of the highlights of the Walk,
the Bacon & Egg BBQ in Belmore Park in
Goulburn. The BBQ was set up and run by
NAB Goulburn. Pictured is Paul's dad Steven
showing where the BBQ is. Steven "gently
coaxed" the good people of Goulburn into
buying bacon & egg rolls with the aid of "The
Finger". Whatever it takes....
The team from NAB Goulburn, what a top
bunch of people. Special thanks to Mal
(pictured left), Tim, Wendy & Angus (back
row). Foreground is Steven, little James
(obscured by "The Finger"), Geoff, Paul,
Paul's mum Evelyn and Geoff's dad Bob, who
had been walking the last few days.
Mal & Angus saying "You must be yolking". A
rare double-yolked egg is on display. It was
so special a punter ate it about 30 seconds
later. The BBQ raised about $300 for Cancer
Council in this fashion. The best clientele
were the Walker's Club (oldest member 87
years young) who needed performance fuel
for their day's exercise.
Evelyn, Bob and Geoff walking out of
Goulburn. It's hard to tell if they are smiles or
grimaces of pain - we'll leave it up to you to
decide!
Evelyn, Bob & Geoff again, this time doing the
hard yards on the Hume Highway. Ev and
Geoff are proudly wearing their Bears
jerseys. The Davidsons have been following
North Sydney since the last premiership in
the 1920's. Go you mighty Bears!
No offence to the truckstop at Marulan, but
this pink truck was as good a backdrop for a
photo as what could be found. Ev and Bob
walked the entire 30 kms with Paul & Geoff.
Not a bad effort, that. It was also freezing
cold, despite Paul insisting it was "T-shirt
weather".
Goulburn! City of the big goat (according to
little Lyssie). Pictured left to right are Chris,
Paul with young James, Lyssie, Geoff, Byron
the wonderdog and Mick. Later that evening
we held a raffle at the Goulburn Workers
Club, who donated sme fantastic prizes.
No-one could escape Tash sitting at her
desk at the front door selling raffle tickets!
30 Sep 08.
Another
gruelling day
on the road
finishes at
Bundanoon,
but luckily
the
Bundanoon
Hotel poured
a very cold
beer. A
quiet,
picturesque
little town.
We were all joined for a big Chinese dinner
in Bundanoon by uncle Graham, auntie Tina
and the kids Lauren, Emily and Luke. They
had travelled all the way from Maitland to say
hello - a massive boost to us halfway through
our Walk.
1 Oct 08. We walked from Bundanoon into
Moss Vale through some of the nicest
countryside in Australia. Not too many trucks
around there, either. We visited Moss Vale
NAB for lunch. From L to R, Geoff, Paul,
Charmaine, Terry & Peter, the Branch
Manager for the Southern Highlands.
At the Bradman Oval in Bowral after walking
from Moss Vale. Geoff and Paul played a
cricket match here a few years ago against
an English Village side and relived their
fantastic efforts with the bat (2 & 4
respectively). Lucky they can walk.
2 Oct 08. At NAB Mittagong Branch Geoff &
Paul were joined also by Paul's workmates
from the Academy in a surprise visit!
Massive thanks to Adam (& clan), Chris.
Brian, Dana, Emily & Jen for making the trek,
and for the hash brown for brekkie. George
and the team at Mittagong laid out the
welcome mat for all of us too.
Throughout the Walk everyone either walking
or in the support crew has had three whinges
allowable per day, so they have to be used
wisely. Most of Geoff's have been about
blisters, and these size 13 feet have some
big ones. That's what 200 kms of walking
can do to you!
